Maybe Your Style Isn't a Label

One of the questions I get asked all the time is:

"How would you describe my style?"

And honestly?

I think we put way too much pressure on finding the perfect label.

We scroll Pinterest looking for style names.

We take quizzes.

We try to decide if we're classic, boho, edgy, minimalist, feminine, trendy, casual, eclectic... the list goes on.

But what if your style isn't meant to fit neatly into a category?

What if your style is simply what makes you feel most like yourself?

Looking At Your Wardrobe Without The Labels

Some people love having a name for their style, and if that helps you, great.

But if you've been feeling stuck because you can't quite figure out what box you belong in, I want to give you permission to stop trying.

Style doesn't have to be one thing.

You can love tailored blazers and graphic tees.

You can wear black one day and florals the next.

You can be polished for work and playful on the weekend.

Your style can evolve right alongside you.

How to Start Defining Your Style Without a Label

Instead of asking, "What is my style?"

Try asking yourself these questions:

What do I wear over and over again?

Open your closet and look for patterns.

Do you gravitate toward neutrals?

Color?

Prints?

Denim?

Structured pieces?

Flowy silhouettes?

The pieces you reach for repeatedly are often telling you something.

What do I get compliments on?

Think about the outfits that make people stop and say:

"That looks so good on you."

Often, those compliments happen when we're wearing something that feels natural and authentic—not when we're trying to be someone else.

How do I want to feel?

This might be the most important question.

Do you want to feel:

  1. Polished?

  2. Creative?

  3. Relaxed?

  4. Powerful?

  5. Playful?

  6. Feminine?

  7. Effortless?

  8. Edgy?

Instead of building a wardrobe around a style category, build it around a feeling. And You know THAT feeling... (at least I hope you do - when you just feel dynamite in a look or a piece).

Create Your Own Style Vocabulary

Rather than naming your style, try naming a few words that describe how you want to feel when you get dressed.

Many of my clients simply state that "I just want to look polished." But it could also be some others...

Maybe your words are:

  1. Comfortable

  2. Elevated

  3. Confident

Or:

  1. Creative

  2. Fun

  3. Approachable

Or:

  1. Relaxed

  2. Modern

  3. Put-together

These words become your filter.

When you're shopping, ask:

"Does this fit how I want to feel?"

When you're getting dressed, ask:

"Does this outfit feel like me?"

Simple.

Style Is Meant To Feel Fun

I think sometimes we forget that clothing is supposed to be creative.

There's no prize for having the most perfectly curated wardrobe.

There's no award for figuring out your style category.

The goal is simply to look in the mirror and say:

"Yep. That's me."

Whether you're heading to lunch with friends, running errands, going to work, or dressing up for an event, your clothes should help you feel confident—not confused.

And if you've been living in leggings, sweatshirts, and cozy socks lately, that's okay too.

The next step isn't reinventing your entire wardrobe.

It's simply finding small ways to feel a little more like yourself again.

Because at the end of the day, style isn't about impressing anyone else.

It's about that double take in the mirror when you catch your reflection and think:

"I look good."

And more importantly:

"I feel like me."
