The Rule of Three: The Simple Trick That Pulls an Outfit Together

We've all had that mirror moment: the outfit's fine, but it's not finished. Sound familiar?

The outfit isn't bad. In fact, you probably like everything you're wearing. It just feels a little...flat.

This happens all the time when I'm styling clients, and there's a simple trick I love to use when an outfit feels almost there.

The Rule of Three.

Two pieces are an outfit. Three pieces are a look.

So, What Is the Rule of Three?

It's exactly what it sounds like.

Start with the outfit you're already wearing, then add one more element to finish it.

Jeans + tee → add an unstructured blazer.

Dress + boots → add a belt or a great scarf.

Sweater + trousers → add a statement necklace or bold earrings.

That third piece doesn't have to be complicated, and it definitely doesn't mean you need to go shopping. A lot of the time, it's already sitting in your closet.

Fall Is the Perfect Time to Try It

Fall has always been such a fun season for me to style clients. Layers, texture, rich colors, boots—there are so many little ways to make an outfit feel pulled together without trying too hard.

It's also the time of year when our closets can get a little chaotic.

Suddenly you have summer clothes, winter clothes, and that mysterious pile of "transition pieces" that may or may not actually transition. 😊

Instead of feeling like you need an entirely new wardrobe for fall, try looking at some of the pieces you've already been wearing and ask yourself:

What's my third piece?

Maybe that summer dress gets a belt and boots. Your favorite tee gets an unstructured blazer. A simple sweater and trousers get the earrings you usually save for something special.

Sometimes one small addition is all an outfit needs.

Try It in Your Own Closet

The next time you put something on and it feels almost right, don't immediately take it off and start over.

Add one thing.

Try the jacket. Add the belt. Put on the scarf. Grab the earrings.

Then take another look.

And if it doesn't feel like you? Take it off and try something else. The Rule of Three isn't really a rule at all. It's just one of those little styling tricks that can help you see your clothes differently.

And that's always one of my favorite things to help women discover—you may have more outfits hanging in your closet than you realize.

I've also pulled together a few of my favorite fall pieces if you're looking for that perfect finishing touch.
