Summer Style Shouldn't Feel Like Another Chore

Every summer, I notice the same thing.

I find myself reaching for workout clothes far more often than I do the rest of the year.

Sometimes it's because I'm headed out for a walk. Sometimes it's because I'm running errands. But if I'm being completely honest, most of the time it's because it's hot…and getting dressed feels like one more thing I have to do.

Can you relate?

Summer has a way of making even the simplest decisions feel like work.

The kids are home. Vacations need to be planned (or recovered from). Calendars are full of BBQs, weekend trips, sporting events, and last-minute invitations. Even if your children are grown, summer somehow has a different rhythm—one that's busier, less structured, and often more exhausting than we expect.

By the time you finally have a moment to get ready, standing in front of your closet can feel like another item on your to-do list.

So we default to what's easiest.

Leggings.

Athletic shorts.

A favorite oversized tee.

And while there's absolutely nothing wrong with dressing comfortably, I also know that many women tell me they don't necessarily feel like themselves when that's all they wear for months at a time.

It's Not About Dressing Up

One of the biggest misconceptions about personal style is that it requires more effort.

I actually believe the opposite.

The goal isn't to spend more time getting dressed.

The goal is to spend less.

When your wardrobe is filled with pieces that work together, flatter your body, and fit your lifestyle, getting dressed becomes almost automatic.

That's especially important during the summer.

Think Transitional Instead of Seasonal

Rather than filling your closet with clothes you'll only wear for a few months, I encourage clients to think about building a transitional wardrobe.

Pieces that move effortlessly from:

  1. Morning coffee to lunch with friends.

  2. Running errands to dinner out.

  3. Vacation sightseeing to an evening on the patio.

  4. School pickup to date night.

Maybe that's a breezy linen pant that feels just as comfortable as your favorite joggers.

A lightweight dress you can throw on in under a minute.

A matching set that looks polished without requiring any thought.

Or an elevated basic tee that pairs with nearly everything you already own.

When your wardrobe works this way, you're no longer starting from scratch every morning.

You're simply choosing from pieces you already know will work.

Decision Fatigue Is Real

We make hundreds—if not thousands—of decisions every day.

What's for dinner?

Did I answer that email?

What time is the appointment?

What do we need from the grocery store?

Who needs a ride?

By the time you get dressed, your brain is already tired.

Your wardrobe shouldn't add to that mental load.

It should remove it.

That's one of the reasons I often tell clients that getting dressed isn't really about clothes.

It's about creating one less decision.

One less source of stress.

One more way to make your day feel a little easier.

The Same Philosophy Applies to Beauty

I feel the same way about makeup.

During the summer, I don't want to spend 30 minutes getting ready.

I want something simple that helps me look refreshed and polished without feeling heavy.

That's one of the reasons I love Merit Beauty. Their products are designed to be effortless, making it easy to put yourself together in just a few minutes without looking overdone.

Your wardrobe should do the same thing.

Simple.

Easy.

Beautiful.

My Favorite Easy Summer Pieces

To make things even easier, I've rounded up some of my favorite summer pieces that combine comfort with polish.

These are the kinds of items I reach for over and over because they take the guesswork out of getting dressed. They're versatile, lightweight, and easy to mix and match—exactly what I want during the busiest season of the year.

I've linked my current favorites below, and I hope they inspire you to create a wardrobe that works for you, not one that gives you one more decision to make.

Give Yourself a Little Grace

If you've been living in workout clothes this summer, you're certainly not alone.

But if you've been missing that feeling of looking in the mirror and thinking, "There I am," it may not take a complete wardrobe overhaul to get it back.

Sometimes all it takes is a handful of pieces that make getting dressed feel effortless.

Because style isn't about impressing anyone else.

It's about making your life a little easier and helping you feel like yourself—even on the hottest, busiest days of summer.

And I think we could all use a little more of that.
