Why Waiting for Your Body to Change Might Be Keeping You From Feeling Confident Today
One of the conversations I find myself having most often with women has very little to do with fashion.
It usually starts with a comment about their body.
"I'm waiting until I lose a few pounds."
"I don't want to buy anything until I get back to where I was."
"Maybe after summer."
"Maybe after the holidays."
"I just need to lose a little weight first."
I understand exactly why they feel that way. Investing in clothes for a body that feels different than it once did can feel difficult, especially if you believe the change is only temporary.
But over the years, I've noticed something.
While women are waiting for their bodies to change, they're often putting their confidence on hold, too.
Your Life Doesn't Pause Because Your Body Changed
Our bodies are never meant to stay exactly the same throughout our lives. They change because life changes, and every season leaves its mark in one way or another. Pregnancy, menopause, illness, stress, aging, career changes, and even positive lifestyle changes can all affect the way our bodies look and feel.
None of those things mean you've done something wrong. They simply mean you've lived.
What makes me sad is seeing women believe they have to earn the right to feel good about themselves again by reaching a certain number on the scale or fitting back into a particular size. Somewhere along the way, many of us began believing confidence comes after the weight comes off.
In my experience, that's rarely how it works.
Confidence doesn't begin with a clothing size. It begins the moment you put something on that fits well, feels comfortable, and allows you to recognize yourself in the mirror again.
When Your Closet No Longer Reflects Your Life
One of the first things I notice during a Closet Audit isn't the number of clothes someone owns—it's how many of those pieces belong to a different season of her life.
There are dresses she loved years ago, jeans she's hoping to wear again someday, and purchases she made for the person she thought she'd become. There's nothing wrong with keeping a few sentimental pieces, but when most of your closet is dedicated to a version of yourself that no longer exists, getting dressed starts to feel discouraging.
It isn't because your body has failed you.
It's because your closet hasn't caught up with the woman you are today.
That's one of the reasons I love helping women edit their wardrobes. Together, we identify the pieces that still serve them, let go of the ones that don't, and build a closet around the life they're actually living—not the life they feel they're supposed to get back to.
Style Has Never Been About a Size
One of the greatest privileges of my work is styling women from every walk of life. They have different careers, different lifestyles, different budgets, and bodies that all look completely different from one another.
What they have in common isn't a clothing size.
They simply want to feel like themselves again.
They want to open their closet without frustration. They want to stop changing outfits three times before leaving the house. They want to feel polished without overthinking every decision.
Those aren't goals reserved for one body type. They're things every woman deserves to experience.
Dress the Woman You Are Today
I wish more women would stop waiting for permission to enjoy getting dressed.
You don't have to wait until after vacation, after the holidays, or after you've lost the weight you've been thinking about for months. Life is happening today, and the moments that matter most—family dinners, date nights, celebrations, vacations, work meetings, and everyday afternoons with the people you love—aren't waiting for the "perfect" version of you to arrive.
Your wardrobe should help you participate in those moments with confidence instead of reminding you of everything you think needs to change.
When your clothes fit well and reflect who you are today, getting dressed becomes one less thing to worry about and one more way to show up as yourself.
Let Your Style Grow With You
I've never believed that personal style is about chasing trends or dressing like someone else. To me, style is simply learning how to express who you are in the season you're living right now.
As our lives evolve, our wardrobes should be allowed to evolve, too.
That doesn't mean giving up on your goals or pretending your body will never change again. It simply means refusing to put your life on hold while you wait for those changes to happen.
The women I see who feel the most confident aren't the ones whose bodies never changed. They're the ones who stopped measuring their worth by the size on the label and started building wardrobes that supported the lives they were living.
And that's what I hope for every woman I work with.
Because confidence isn't about fitting into your clothes.
It's about having clothes that fit you.
