How to Put Together a Winter Look

“How can I just put together a look?”

Clients ask this question all the time. Like most things this gets easier with practice but it can take a while, especially when we face unpredictable weather. Or going from one family’s casual holiday meal to another’s more formal one in the same day.

As the winter chill sets in, and with the holidays upon us, mastering the art of putting together a stylish and cozy outfit becomes essential. I’m sharing my tips and my favorite clothing item to instantly punch up a look!

  1. Start with a Solid Foundation: Begin by selecting a reliable base layer such as a button up, thermal shirt or a classic long-sleeve tee. This foundational layer not only adds warmth but also serves as a canvas for the textures and patterns for the ensemble. Roll the sleeves up your forearms to show off bracelets. Tuck this shirt in, even if you only do a little bit at the front. The tuck makes your outfit seem more intentional. Pick your favorite pair of jeans or chino and you are on your way to a put together look!

  2. Vests for The Win: Vests are a fantastic layering piece that provides extra warmth without the bulk of a full jacket. Choose a quilted or puffer vest for a sporty vibe or a tailored vest for a more polished look. Vests are versatile and can be easily paired with jeans, leggings, or even skirts for a variety of outfit options. This added layer gives depth and makes your outfit look more intentional.

  3. Cable Knit Sweaters: Cable knit sweaters are winter classics that add a touch of sophistication to any outfit. My favorite way to wear a cable knit around the holidays is with a pair of leather or faux leather pants and booties. Add a necklace, or three, for additional personalization.

  4. Mix Textures and Patterns: Embrace the beauty of textures and patterns by combining different materials in your outfit. For example, pair a chunky cable knit sweater with a sleek quilted vest for a dynamic contrast. This mix adds visual interest to your look.

  5. Add a Black Blazer:  Instantly elevate any base layer with a black blazer. Everything looks good under one; silk tank, a tee, or sleeveless turtleneck. Roll the sleeves to avoid looking too formal. Jeans or corduroys to keep it classic and not too dressy.

  6. Dress It Up: Reach for a black dress or romper you’ve tucked away in your closet. Pair with tights and booties, unless you’re more formal and need a dressier shoe.  Have a piece of jewelry you haven’t grabbed in a while? Throw that on with this look which will help you feel fresh.

  7. Accessorize Thoroughly: Elevate your winter ensemble with carefully chosen accessories. A stylish beanie, a pair of leather gloves, or a cozy scarf can add both warmth and flair to your look. Get playful with your jewelry and add a few (more) bracelets before you leave the house!

I’ve put together a closet of pieces to achieve these looks if they aren’t already in your wardrobe. Or if you need to update the pieces you do have!

Mastering the art of putting together a winter outfit is all about combining style and functionality. By selecting versatile pieces, playing with textures and lengths, and thoughtfully accessorizing, you can create winter looks that keep you warm and fashion-forward. Embrace the cozy charm of cable knits and the practicality of vests to make a statement this winter season. Stay warm and stylish!
